Journal: Imitation

Years ago, I received a beautiful love letter.
My suitor had written it on beautiful lavender-scented, black and white damask stationery.
I received the letter on an ordinary day, “just because”...which I found delightful.
The blushworthy content said everything a woman like me wants to hear.
It hit all the right notes.
I felt so special...until I read it a 2nd time.
Then a 3rd.
And I realized, with horror:
This was a recycled letter.
I confirmed my suspicion with the author, right before I ripped it up and hurled the pieces into the closest wastebasket.
The first time I read the letter, I hurriedly skimmed through it because I was so eager to absorb it.
Upon closer inspection, it became clear these captivating words had not been written with me in mind.
They were written for someone like me - a former flame - which is why the letter seemed to be perfect at first glance.
But there were tiny details, which my suitor had failed to consider, that exposed his laziness...and instantly destroyed trust.
That's how I feel about AI. Having a tool doesn't automatically make you good as the people who’ve invested years mastering their craft.
Copywriting is a complex skill that takes time to master. There are no shortcuts for understanding the difference between stellar copy and "Meh, that'll do" copy.
AI can compile decent copy, but that doesn't mean it's effective.
So if you're feeling nervous about the future of your work, copywriters...relax.
Your intended audience will know the difference between a sad imitation and the real thing.
