Journal: Gentle Nudge

The major downside of being a one woman show is having to wear so many ill-fitting hats. We are all capable of doing a few things well. Out of that small set of abilities is a subset of things we do with peerless excellence.

Me? I know branding. I know copywriting. I also do well with French, history, and Caribbean dance.

There are plenty of other things I can add to my list of what I’m proficient at, but one thing that’ll never cease to give me a headache and bring me to the point of tears is updating all the software of my marketing stack.

It takes a lot of little pieces to keep the promotional machine humming along. When they’re working as they should, life is an absolute breeze.

But when something breaks, and a breakdown is as inevitable as death or taxes, it’s on me to figure out how to get everything working again. Depending on the complexity of the situation, that means a potential setback that can slow me down significantly.

The worst part of all this is, time after time, the biggest factor in these operational breakdowns is putting off regular maintenance tasks until they morph into an emergency. It’s something most of us are guilty of doing. If your brain is wired to think in archetypes and color psychology, it’s unlikely you’re going to be enthused about updating the API key and plugins for your business software.

Consider this a gentle nudge from me to tend to that thing you’ve been putting off for a while in your business or in your personal life. Self-care matters immensely because you can’t accomplish your professional goals if you’re not in good shape.

For me, that means finally sending an email to get assistance with making my email marketing software play nicely with my website theme so I don’t have to waste more time dealing with the frustration of having to figure out what’s wrong on my own.

Then I’m going to wrap my workday so I can take a desperately needed nap before I transition to my second shift duties as mom.
